The 2016 China Miao Embroidery Charity Exhibition Held in New York

Jointly organized by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), the People's Government of Kaili city in Guizhou province, and the leading international fashion magazine Marie Claire, the 2016 Chinese Miao Embroidery Charity Exhibition was held in New York from September 15 to 21, 2016.

 

Jing Dunquan, Vice Chairman of CSCLF, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He said: "This exhibition is one of the most important activities to deepen cultural exchange between China and the United States. Miao embroidery shows the essence of Chinese traditional culture. I believe US people will better understand the long-lasting Chinese history and colorful Chinese culture, as well as the beautiful Chinese dream through the exhibition."

Miao embroidery is the embroidery passed down in the Miao ethnic group. CSCLF and fashion magazine Marie Claire established the CSCLF Marie Claire Women Happiness Fund in 2011 to save the intangible cultural heritage as well as help women in minority nationality inhabited regions improve their living conditions and social status. Under the support of the People's Government of Kaili city in Guizhou province, the fund organized training activities of Miao embroidery. It supported 8 Miao villages and benefited over 600 Miao households. Each household that participated in the program get 3000 to 5000 yuan more in yearly household income. It also launched a new mode of combining precise poverty alleviation and Miao embroidery inheritance together.

The fund would continue to cooperate with UN Development Program and other donors this year to launch the Happiness at the Fingertip public welfare event, which aims to protect traditional handicrafts, improve the life of women and children in remote regions, and explore the sustainable way of precise poverty alleviation.

 

Hundreds of guests attended the event, including Tang Jiuhong, director of CSCLF Fund Department, Zhang Hong, director of Kaili Bureau of Sports, Radio and Television, Wang Shaoshuai, chairman of Kaili Municipal Literary Federation, Yang Wen, chief executive officer of the China Region of Hearst Media Advertising Group, Deng Li, chief content officer of Marie Claire, Silvia Morimoto, Chief of Staff of Asia-Pacific Bureau of UN Development Program, and celebrity Ouyang Nana.

 

The exhibition opened to the public at New York's Venue 57, and lasted for 7 days.
