On October 24, Wang Jiarui, CPPCC Vice-chairperson and CSCLF Chairman, met with Mr. Nicholas Rosellini, UN Resident Coordinator.
Wang first welcomed Mr. Nicholas Rosellini and other heads of the United Nations Country Team in China. In his remarks, he said, “China has firmly upheld multilateralism and maintained close cooperation with the United Nations for over 70 years. At the 19th CPC National Congress, General Secretary Xi Jinping noted that China will continue to support the United Nations, act as a responsible major power, get more involved in the reform and building of the global governance system and keep contributing its strength and wisdom. The 2017 UN Day event jointly held by the CSCLF and the United Nations Country Team in China is of remarkable significance as the 19th CPC National Congress followed by the whole world with interest came to a successful end just at the same time.”
Wang reviewed the CSCLF’s efforts to promote peace and development in partnership with the UN agencies. “In September, UN Secretary-general Mr. Guterres and I met in New York. We agreed to deepen the cooperation between the CSCLF and the United Nations. By leveraging our respective strengths, we will join hands to advance the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.” He also encouraged the United Nations Country Team in China to make better use of the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, the China Soong Ching Ling Science & Culture Center for Young People and other platforms.
Wang quoted the report made by President Xi at the Congress that the principal contraction facing the Chinese society in the new era is that between unbalance and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life. “We hope Qinghai will realize greater and more all-round development in partnership with the United Nations Country Team in China,” he added.
Mr. Nicholas Rosellini spoke highly of the CSCLF’s commitment to world peace, people-to-people exchange and targeted poverty alleviation. He said the United Nations Country Team in China values the partnership with the foundation and hopes to elevate it to a new high through new models so as to make more contributions to turning the 2030 Agenda into realities. He also thanked the CSCLF for holding the UN Day Event in such a beautiful setting as the Former Residence of Soong Ching-Ling.
Among attendees of the meeting were vice minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen, vice governor of Qinghai Province Tian Jinchen, CSCLF standing vice chairperson Hang Yuanxiang and vice chairperson Jing Dunquan, as well as heads of the 17 agencies linked to the United Nations Country Team in China like the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In recent years, the CSCLF has been committed to exchanges and cooperation with UN agencies. The foundation signed Memorandum of Understanding with agencies like the UNICEF, UNDP and UN Women. Jointly hosting the “21st Century Children Development International Forum”, “International Forum on Women”, they focus on children’s education, appeal for the protection of children’s rights, promote gender equality and women’s empowerment and encourage women to get more involved in global affairs. They also jointly launched a public welfare project named “Happiness on Fingertip”, which aims to reduce poverty in Miao people’s villages of Guizhou, as well as to preserve and inherit local intangible cultural heritage.
